Pointy Eye Mantis -
Creobroter
gemmatus
Family: Hymenopodidae Subfamily: Hymenopodinae Tribe: Hymenopodini Genus: Creobroter
This is a small flower type mantis species from rain forest. They can be found from south Asia to South East Asia as far as southern China. They are usually in brown or green in color and has pointy eyes. They are well camouflage in bushes full of flowers. They are aggressive species feed mainly on insects that were attracted to flower nectar or pollen. Male of this species will fly away with slightest disturbance. Female feed almost every day after turning into adult and does not fly due to its weight.
Both sexes have long wings and are capable fliers. Full-grown males are about 3 to 4 cm in length, females about 4 to 5 cm.
They prefer a humid environment and live about nine months in captivity. Females can be cannibalistic but males are fairly communal.
They molt 8 times to become an adult and can take between 2 and 5 months to mature depending on food and temperature. They are the smallest yet most widespread Creobroter species.
When displaying the pink inner wings show off. Many bodyparts can vary between white, pink and green like the well known
Creobroter are known for having varicolored (yellow, white, red, brown, etc.) markings which serve as camouflage by hiding the creatures' actual shape and making them look somewhat like flowers when hiding amidst green foliage. The adult males are long and slender and have wings that are longer than their abdomen. The adult females are bulkier and broader, with wings that extend just a little bit over the end of the abdomen.
Rather than resembling foliage or flowers, some species of Creobroter resemble ants during the their early nymph stages. Ant mimicry is a useful defense against predation for the young Creobroter, as most ants are relatively unpalatable and aggressive making insect predators that rely on vision to identify their prey, such as birds and wasps, avoid them.
As usual as any Creobroter, this species grow up fast with plenty of flies. The ootheca was incubated at 85F with 60% humidity. It took about 6 weeks to hatch in that condition. Hatchling is big enough to handle D. hydei. Nymphs quickly grow with extra heat and food, with just 2 months some have reached adult.
After as little as two weeks, the female has shown sign of rejecting food and starting to release pheromone. Males usually mature sooner and sometimes mount on the female that just molted a few days ago. Obviously, unprepared female will give the male a good "whack" to remind them she is not ready. But I have seen female as young as just 10 days mated with males. Regardless, the pairing was fruitful and soon female starting to produce ootheca of good size as long as their body length of 4 cm.
