    ABOUT THE BOOK
In 1972, John A. Spear, a life long English teacher and member of the New York Anglers' Club, set out to tell the story of the Montague City Rod Company. Over the next two years, he dedicated most of his time and effort studying the various aspects of this company's history. That research included an extensive interview and correspondence with Sewell N. Dunton, for 24 years Montague’s Treasurer and the man who purchased their bamboo rod making equipment and who continued making rods until the 1970s. Spear’s sudden illness and death stopped his passion project in its tracks. Now, however, after being lost for nearly 50 years, Spear's research is finally being published. It reveals much about Montague that has never before been in print. Edited and annotated by Dr. Todd E.A. Larson, this work includes a biography of Spear, his complete and unedited interview with Dunton, the full text of 21 letters written between the two, and an extensive photographic tour of Dunton’s rod works showing much of the Montague equipment. This is a volume in the 2nd set of the
