This auction is for a Sagamore Iver Johnson Sporting Goods Company split-bamboo fly rod as stamped on the reel seat. Vintage Sagamore model rod was made by the Montague Rod Co. while George Varney was the head of rod manufacturing. Hardware has distinct Varney trim work. Reel seat has soldered raised rails and is stamped SAGAMORE IVER JOHNSON S.G. CO - knurled ferules measure approximately .176 and.280 and still pop but are heavily tarnished and will need to be properly cleaned to fully seat. Rod is an excellent example of the transition period from rattan wraps and calcutta cane to cork and Tonkin. This rod looks to have been built with calcutta cane and shows the early use of cork rings as they are cut with pores running perpendicular to the grip as opposed to parallel as became standard. Cork grip is still in very good condition with only the slightest bit of ridging in one small area. Rod has been refinished with an incorrect stripping guide. Rod is ready to fish but is an excellent candidate for being properly researched and restored. One tip is down or short by approximately 1/2" (looks like at ferrule). Orange and green wraps. Perfection and Roto style tip tops - see photo. Slower wet fly action feels like would be great fun with a 3/4 wt. See pictures for full description. Sold as shown.
