Fly Fishing Rod
Manufactured for Hardy Bros. of Alnwick
Searching the internet reveals a lot of history on how in the 1960s American Jon Tarantino, the All Around Casting Champion of the World, convinced Bill Hardy to make a series of rods using American fiberglass (Tarantino-Fisher) blanks and this rod is a product of that partnership.
It is the same blank as the early Winston San Francisco fiberglass rods.
Doug Merrick and Jon Tarantino invented the white fiberglass ferrule when Tarantino had a shop on Harrison Street in San Francisco near the Winston shop.
Joe Fisher would come up from Southern California to show and sell blanks to Merrick and Tarantino.
Tarantino and Fisher, as per their agreement with Jim Hardy, then duplicated Fishers’ equipment in England to make the blanks for these rods.
I think that the series was called JET but this rod either had no decal or it’s missing the decal designating this although it does have the Tarantino designed Spigot Ferrule which was used on the JET rods.
I would rate this rod to be in at least very good to maybe excellent minus condition.
The glass is dark brown with black wraps. It has a 7” double well cork handle, a black metal up-locking reel seat and snake guides. It also has its metal and cork ferrule plug.
The only problem I see with the rod is that the black butt cap is missing.
The rod has the Hardy emblem stamped on the locking nut, what looks like “F/K” in Hardy script on the butt above the handle and 9’ 4” on the opposite side, #10 about 1 ft. up from the handle and the number 9 on each part of the rod at the ferrule.
These rods, while not the famed Hardy bamboo rods, are very nice rods with a strong American connection.
